Ingredients
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup hot water
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/2 cup chocolate chips
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). In a large bowl, whisk together flour, granulated sugar, 1/4 cup cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
- Stir in milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract until just combined. Pour batter into an ungreased 8×8 inch baking dish.
- In a separate bowl, combine hot water, brown sugar, and 1/2 cup cocoa powder. Mix well until sugar is dissolved. Gently pour this mixture over the batter in the baking dish. Do not stir.
- Sprinkle chocolate chips evenly over the top of the mixture.
- Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the top is set and a toothpick inserted near the center comes out with moist crumbs. Let cool slightly before serving.
Notes
For a richer flavor, use dark chocolate chips. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently in the microwave before serving. You can also add a pinch of cinnamon or a dash of espresso powder to the dry ingredients for a twist.
