Ingredients
- 3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
- 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
- 1/2 teaspoon active dry yeast
- 1 1/2 cups warm water (105-115°F)
- 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese, divided
Instructions
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and yeast. Stir in 1 1/2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese.
- Add the warm water and stir until a shaggy dough forms. The dough will be sticky.
- Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let it rise at room temperature for at least 12 hours, or up to 18 hours.
- After the rising time, preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C) with a Dutch oven inside. The Dutch oven needs to be screaming hot.
- Carefully remove the hot Dutch oven from the oven. Generously dust a piece of parchment paper with flour. Gently turn the dough out onto the prepared parchment paper.
- Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar cheese on top of the dough. Using the parchment paper as handles, carefully lower the dough into the hot Dutch oven.
- Cover the Dutch oven and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the lid and bake for another 15 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the internal temperature reaches 200-210°F (93-99°C).
- Carefully remove the bread from the Dutch oven using the parchment paper. Let it cool completely on a wire rack before slicing and serving.
Notes
For a more intense cheddar flavor, use extra sharp cheddar cheese. You can also add other herbs and spices to the dough, such as garlic powder, onion powder, or dried rosemary. Store leftover bread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
