It’s incredibly easy to prepare and promises a delightful experience with every spoonful, warm from the oven.

  • Total Time: 45 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 5 medium apples (such as Gala or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, divided
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup or honey, divided
  • 1 1/2 cups rolled oats (old-fashioned)
  • 1/2 cup whole wheat flour (or oat flour for gluten-free option)
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/3 cup coconut oil, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease an 8×8 inch (20×20 cm) baking dish or similar sized oven-safe dish.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, lemon juice, 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon, nutmeg, and 1 tablespoon of maple syrup or honey. Toss gently until the apples are evenly coated. Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread it out evenly.
  3. In a separate medium bowl, combine the rolled oats, whole wheat flour (or oat flour), remaining 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon, and sea salt. Stir well to mix the dry ingredients.
  4. Pour the melted coconut oil and remaining 1 tablespoon of maple syrup or honey into the oat mixture. Stir with a fork or your hands until the mixture is well combined and forms coarse crumbs. Ensure there are no dry spots.
  5. Sprinkle the oat crumble topping evenly over the apple mixture in the baking dish. Gently pat it down slightly.
  6. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the apple filling is bubbly and tender, and the oat topping is golden brown and crisp. If the topping browns too quickly, you can loosely cover it with foil for the last 10 minutes.
  7. Remove from the oven and let it cool for at least 10-15 minutes before serving. This allows the crumble to set slightly and prevents burns from the hot fruit.

Notes

For a gluten-free option, ensure you use certified gluten-free rolled oats and replace whole wheat flour with oat flour or almond flour. You can add 1/4 cup of chopped walnuts or pecans to the crumble topping for an extra layer of crunch and healthy fats. Serve warm with a dollop of plain Greek yogurt or a drizzle of extra maple syrup. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated gently.
