Elevate your weeknight dinner with these French Onion Beef Sloppy Joes! Savory ground beef simmered in a rich, caramelized onion sauce, topped with melted cheese and served on toasted buns. A comforting twist on a classic!

  • Total Time: 55 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1/2 cup red grape juice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 6 hamburger buns, split and toasted
  • 6 slices provolone or Gruyere cheese

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add sliced onions, sugar, salt, and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until onions are deeply caramelized and golden brown, about 25-30 minutes. Reduce heat if onions start to burn.
  2. Add ground beef to the skillet and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned. Drain off any excess grease.
  3. Sprinkle flour over the beef and onions and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
  4. Gradually pour in beef broth, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Stir in red grape juice vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, and Dijon mustard. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5-10 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened slightly.
  5. Spoon the French onion beef mixture onto the toasted hamburger buns. Top each with a slice of provolone or Gruyere cheese.
  6. Place the assembled sloppy joes on a baking sheet and broil for 1-2 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Alternatively, you can cover the skillet and let the cheese melt from the residual heat.
  7. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Notes

For a richer flavor, use bone broth. You can also add a splash of balsamic vinegar for extra tang. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave. Serve with your favorite sides, such as coleslaw, potato salad, or French fries.
